Obituary of Madeline Ethel Goodwin
Madeline Ethel (Grant) Goodwin passed away July 4th, 2023 at the age of 100.
Born in Bayfield, N.B. on June 9, 1923, she was the youngest daughter of George S. Grant and Emma (Dove) Grant. She celebrated her 100th birthday last month.
Madeline married the love of her life, Ellis Raymond Goodwin of Amherst, N.S., on June 21, 1944 in Bayfield.
They lived much of their lives in Fort Lawrence and several years in Amherst before moving to Ontario, living first in Mount Brydges before moving to Strathroy and later residing together at Middlesex Terrace, Delaware until his passing on February 3rd, 2016.
She is survived by two sons – Stephen (Brenda) of New Glasgow, N.S. Charles (Debbie) of Amherst, and daughter Enid Gough of Guelph, Ont. She is fondly remembered by four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two nieces.
Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her eldest son, Grant, her three sisters – Carrie, Grace and Mary – and chosen sister Lillian Stright.
Madeline attended school in Spence Settlement, N.B., where she grew up, before graduating from high school in Port Elgin. She lived with her sister Carrie in Saint John, N.B. during secretarial training before moving to Amherst, where she worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia.
She later served as a host for several summers at the Nova Scotia Information Bureau in Fort Lawrence. She also worked for Simpson Sears, the Nova Scotia Power Commission office in Amherst and in the maintenance department as a secretary at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B.
Madeline and Ellis were active members of Trinity St. Stephen United Church in Amherst for many years. After they moved to Ontario, they transferred their membership to Cook's United Church in Mount Brydges and later to Strathroy United Church.
She was also a long-time member of the Women’s Institute in Nova Scotia’s Cumberland County.
Madeline and Ellis enjoyed many trips by motor home to Amherst and area, including the Grant family cottage in Upper Cape, near Port Elgin, while their health their health was more robust. They travelled east with the help of others in later years.
Their last visit east was in 2013 for a grandson's wedding in Tidnish, N.S. on their 69th anniversary.
Madeline was highly regarded for her grace, wit and a multitude of domestic talents. They included cooking, cleaning, helping with home improvements and gardening.
The Goodwins’ large and stately home in Fort Lawrence was the location for many gatherings for its residents.
As per Madeline’s wishes cremation has taken place and, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment of ashes will occur at a later date in Bayfield, N.B. In memory of Madeline’s donations may be made to Middlesex Terrace, 2094 Gideon Drive, Delaware, Ontario N0L 1E0.
