I got to know Martin as a neighbour at Kettle Point, and his mother had told him she would pay for the vet. bill for one of my dogs! It was very generous, but fortunately, my dog healed without further operations. I walked Buddy a lot. Martin had saved the husky puppy from a home deck where he was lonely and abandoned. I walked Buddy by the beach. Over the years, we chatted when I visited Kettle point. Peter and I invited him to dinner a couple of times, and I helped with the yard, removing branches and mowing, or raking dead leaves when I took care of my own yard. He would offer me bottles of water, the same ones Buddy loved to play with when they were empty. Martin said his dog companion loved them "because of the noise they made, and because they jumped around". Martin did not want me to touch the heaps of branches in the backyard, because "it protected the rabbits, who needed a place to live". He liked the fact that I could use some of the fallen wood for my chimney as starter wood: he loved and respected animals indeed and he was conscious of our impact. He also loved being in the woods. I was sorry when I saw him gone to his new home in Forest. I had lost the most pleasant neighbour. He was wise, rational, reasonable and pragmatic. I liked our discussions, and Peter and I will miss him. Servanne and Peter
